Ghosts have maintained a presence in art from ancient times. From pre-historic cave paintings through to our present uneasy times, artists have used the transcendental figure to explore ideas of an inner life and to make visible the mystical and metaphysical. Although the idea of the human soul was sometimes symbolically or literally depicted in ancient cultures as a bird or other animal, it was widely held that the soul was an exact reproduction of the body in every feature, even down to clothing the person wore.
GHOSTSONGS showcases the work of John Mulvany and Morgan Sorne. The artists met while showing together at Galleri Urbane in Marfa, Texas and both utilize ghosts and spirits in their work for divergent reasons. Sornes life-sized painted cutouts of children and other ethereal figures set against mysterious landscapes evoke a post-apocalyptic future. Mulvanys Irish gothic-tinged paintings of spectral figures haunting the homes of East Austin suggest a past that is not ready to be forgotten.
John Mulvany is originally from Ireland who lives and works in Austin Texas. His work has been shown in Ireland, the UK, Germany and the U.S. He was featured in the 2009 Texas Biennial and is currently working for a solo show at the Dougherty Arts Center, Austin in early 2010.
Morgan Sorne is an artist, musician and actor from Tallahassee, Florida currently living and working in Austin. He was also featured in the 2009 Texas Biennial and in addition to his painting is currently working on a solo album of his music.
